IMCD Group is the first distributor to win Lean & Green award

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands (17 May, 2011) – IMCD Group B.V. is the first distributor to be awarded the prestigious Lean & Green award. The award, that will be handed out on 19 May, is a part of the innovation programme Sustainable Logistics by Connekt, an independent network of companies and authorities, collaborating to achieve a sustainable improvement in mobility. Connekt supports 250 leading companies, so called ‘front runners’, in the field of sustainable transportation of goods. The Sustainable Logistics programme was initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Transport and it supports logistics companies in their strive to significantly reduce CO2 emissions while increasing profitability.

Stan Bijsterveld, IMCD Group Supply Chain Manager, proudly explains what the company had to do in order to comply: “IMCD is one of the ‘front runners’ which are companies within the network of shipping companies, hauliers, distributors and councils, that have committed to reduce their CO2 emissions by at least 20% in 2012.”

In order to achieve these goals, IMCD Supply Chain has investigated the combination of the flow of goods, enforcing sustainability requirements on suppliers and reducing the number of unloaded kilometres in collaboration with hauliers and customers. The Group is also utilising other modes of transport, such as rail and barge.

“IMCD fosters culture that drives innovation and continuous improvement,” adds Bijsterveld. The company believes that sustainability functions as a source of inspiration for innovative thinking that contributes to the development of new concepts and services for its business partners. In order to achieve this goal, it is the Group’s policy to work only with the right partners who also understand and see sustainability as a competitive advantage.

“Sustainability is increasingly important in the world we live in for various well-known reasons. As a part of this, shippers and carriers should not – and cannot – stay behind. This is why we have made the goal of reducing the carbon footprint by 20% by year 2012 one of our main business goals. We are not only responsible to our current business partners and end users of products made with our material, but also to future generations”, explains Piet van der Slikke, CEO of IMCD Group B.V.

Although Sustainable Logistics is a Dutch project, IMCD Group and Connekt have agreed to expand the project on a European scale.
