World Environment Day: IMCD trend-driven approach to a more sustainable future

Story
On June 5th, we celebrate World Environment Day, a reminder that sustainability is not a distant ambition; it is a responsibility being shaped through the choices we make every day.
At IMCD, sustainability is a topic that touches every market we serve. Through the expertise of our business groups, we continuously monitor the trends, drivers, and changing expectations that influence more responsible choices across value chains.

That progress often begins at the source: with the materials we choose, how they are designed, and what happens to them after use.

Circular Materials

Reducing waste, in particular, starts with better material. Our Advanced Materials Business Group team helps customers understand how material selection can improve recyclability, including guidance on choosing the right materials for recyclability.

At the same time, industry progress depends on understanding where the market stands today. Our IMCD Industrial Solutions Business Group team developed the State of Sustainability report, sharing insights into sustainability priorities, challenges, and perceptions across industrial sectors. The report helps identify where action is needed and how companies can measure progress more effectively.

Bio-Based and Lower-Impact Solutions

Reducing reliance on fossil-based resources is an important part of the transition to more sustainable industries. Our Lubricants & Energy Business Group team explores this shift through insights on the rise of bio-lubricants and the role of  biofuels for the future.

In agrochemical applications, our Pharmaceuticals Business Group team highlights market trends around sustainable crop protection, biological ingredients, and environmentally conscious agricultural practices. This includes technical insights into creating more sustainable crop protection formulations and biological crop protection and environmentally friendlier products.

Efficient Formulation and Manufacturing

Sustainability also depends on improving efficiency across production, application, and end use. Our Coatings & Construction Business Group team examines key formulation trends and growth opportunities in the Building Tomorrow trends commentary, with a focus on construction and materials.

In pharmaceuticals, we showcase greener manufacturing approaches, focusing on formulation strategies that can improve process efficiency, reduce waste, and contribute to more sustainable production methods. Examples include the Apixaban coated tablet concept and the Ginkgo coated tablet concept.

We also address the growing shift toward scalable and sustainable production technologies through work in industrial biotechnology and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

For everyday applications, our Home Care I&I Business Group team explores laundry industry trends, including cold-water washing, concentrated formulas, and other approaches designed to deliver strong performance with a reduced footprint.

From Insight to Action

Across IMCD, our Business Group teams bring together technical expertise, market insight, and close supplier and customer collaboration to turn sustainability ambitions into practical, scalable solutions.

World Environment Day is a moment to recognise progress, but also to reinforce the need for continued action. By sharing knowledge, developing more responsible formulations, and supporting innovation across industries, we help our suppliers, customers and partners move from sustainable intent to measurable impact.

Together, we can continue shaping solutions that support both business growth and a more sustainable future.
